LED instructions DIY Guide for car, motorcycle, or home use. ![]() LED instructions FAQBasics about LEDs Light emitting diodes, are commonly called LEDs. They do dozens of different jobs and are found in all kinds of devices. Among other things, they form the numbers on digital clocks, transmit information from remote controls, light up watches and tell you when your appliances are turned on. Collected together, they can form images on a jumbo television screen or illuminate a traffic light. Basically, LEDs are just tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. But unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, they don't have a filament that will burn out, and they don't get especially hot. They are illuminated solely by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material, and they last just as long as a standard transistor. LEDs can last a long time, and sometimes a lifetime. All leds use DC current to light up. It’s even more true today, since the cars of the recent past are so well built. It’s not uncommon to get 150,000 miles out of a car these days — and the body. The voltage required for LEDs can vary due to color and type. One thing you must understand is that an off the shelf LED cannot be hooked directly to your average 1. V power without blowing up. Most LEDs require 2- 4 Volts DC. To obtain this lower voltage from a higher voltage such as your vehicle, you must install resistors. These resistors reduce the voltage the LED is running at. Using some basic V=IR and circuit theory you can calculate what resistor values you need. Why choose our LEDs?#1 You save time and money, because our leds are ready to use by battery 6. V- 1. 2V+ DC!#2 Quality!
All resistors are attached and sealed with wiring. They do not consume more than 3. A each, so you don't need to worry about straining your battery. Only hook up in Parallel, Never in series, series will make them dimmer. You cannot hook LEDs to AC (house power), they need direct current DC found in batteries/cars/boats. You can hook them in your house using an AC- DC adaptor (6- 1. V sold everywhere, look below for instructions. The difference between 5mm and 8mm is not the brightness, but how big the glass size is. How do I mount? Use Twist Ties, Tape, Double Back Tape, Velcro, Super Glue or any other form to secure to your location. You can drill a hole of 5mm or 8mm and insert the led in the hole and put a bit of super glue around the edge and it will be held in place. You can use a HOT GLUE GUN also. View on the left pictures for 8mm White LED install onto a computer. What else may I need? Extra wire (thinner the better, because otherwise it gets bulky Patience! Use electrical tape on all your connections. For extra secure protection use solder (soldering gun can be bought at radio shack). HOW TO WIRE YOUR CAR WITH LEDs or NEONs? First off, there are hundreds of ways your car can be wired. A car is full of electronics and all of these electronics run off 1. V DC power. This is the same power used in motorcycles, RV's and other machinery like tractors. All cars have a ground which is on the chassis of the vehicle; this is called negative or ground. So if you are going to wire something you can always hook the negative (black wire) of a led to the metal of the car exposes anywhere. The positive (white or red) needs to go to a 1. V+ source in the vehicle. You must understand that LEDs only work in one polarity. If the wires are hooked up backwards they will not light up. The best way to wire your car is to first find out what you're going to light up. Find the location you are going to mount the leds, and then look around the location for a source of power. For example, if you're going to mount the LEDS under the glove box dash: Find source of power behind the radio. The back of the radio has 2 types of 1. V power you could use. V+ Power which is always on, usually YELLOW and 2. A 1. 2V+ power called remote (some times RED), which only comes on when you have your car ON. The remote wire is the best wire to use for 1. V+ for running interior leds. You do not need to worry about installing switches to turn them off when you're leaving your car. Other locations for power include your dome lights, which turn on only when the doors are open. You can create some nice led effects in your car if you wire to these. All you need to do is find which one is 1. V+ and which ground. Simple wire to these and your lights only come on when you have the headlights or park lamp lights on. If you do not want to go that route, then you can wire the leds directly to the battery with a SWITCH INLINE. This is going to make things much more complicated because you need to figure how to get wires from the battery inside and create a circuit. FOR MOTORCYCLESSimply wire to the front or rear headlight or park lamp lights. A little experimentation and you can find which is 1. V+ and which ground. If you do not want these on only when the motorcycles lights are on, then you will need a switch mounted between the battery and the leds. Our LED are water proof you so you don't have to worry about damaging them. However, be careful of the wire touching extremely hot metal such as the exhaust. Try to keep your wiring as clean as possible and wrap them in electrical tape to protect. ADDING LED/NEONS ILLUMINATION ON YOUR DASH/INSIDWHATS NEEDED? LEDs) 1. Remove glove box or trim peice you want to mount leds inside. Find source of power to supply the leds/neons. Cut into the power source and rap your LED wires around this positive/negative you found (remember ground or body of car is also always negative) Examples include LIGHT for glove box, back of stereo, door light etc.. Wire your leds in Parallel to your power source. Make sure your polarity is correct. It should not damage the LED if you put it on backwards. Use black tape Do not pit the leds in series, this will cause them ot be very dim or not work at all. Drill holes 5mm or 8mm depending on what leds you purchased. Once drilled insert the led HEAD to see if it fits. If it fits, then all you need to do is place a few drops of super glue, crazy glue or any kind of glue to secure it to that hole. Hot glue gun works great too. You should have a final product similar to below. This is an example of an LED mounted on a dash. LED TAIL LIGHTS OR BRAKE LIGHTS? LED tail lights / Brake / Turn signals can be done by wiring the leds directly to your wiring coming to your tail light housing. However, one think you have to understand is, most cars recognize normal bulbs only, and if you hook leds ONLY to this wiring, certian cars will give you issues, such as not working or fast turn signals (like bulb burnt out). For Turn signals you 1. Solution is to use LOAD LINE RESISTORS. What a Load line resitor is it fools the car in thinking that you still have normal bulbs hooked to the car. Since your trying to used LEDs you must place these resistors to the wiring. Please look below for the wiring. These resistors can be picked uped at any hobbie store, or Radio Shack, and the internet. You need at least 2. Watt Resistors in 6ohm or 3 ohm depending on if your going to wiring LEDs in the Front and Rear of your turn signal. How to wire for LEDs at Tail/Brake/Signal Light IGNORE THE 1. Those are if your using LED bulbs already made for your housing, if your doing custom work, just mount the leds as you see above. Its very simple what your doing, your just grounding the positive of the line that goes to your led with a resistor. This make the car think there is a NORMAL bulb still there. You may not need to do this resistor modification if your only doing the brake/Tail light on certain cars. It depends on the car. But the Turn signal you must do on all cars!
